Freeze Dried
We freeze dry candy in our own store. Freeze drying pulls almost all the moisture out, which puffs the candy up and turns it shatteringly crunchy — closer to a potato chip than to the candy you started with. The flavor gets more concentrated too.
Most bags are $5.99, freeze dried ice cream is $8.99, and the Skiddlers Big Jar holds 2½–3 pounds for $45.99 with free shipping. We add new varieties regularly, so the lineup changes.
Filter and sort
What freeze drying actually does to candy
Freeze drying freezes the candy solid, then uses a vacuum to turn the ice directly into vapor without ever melting it. The moisture leaves, but the structure stays — so the candy expands, becomes porous, and shatters instead of chews.
The result, in our own product notes, is light, airy and crunchy — "crunchy and crispy as a potato chip." A chewy candy becomes brittle. A hard candy becomes puffy. And because you've removed water but not sugar or flavoring, the taste concentrates.
Every freeze dried item here is made in our store, not bought in. It's why the range keeps shifting: we're regularly running new candies through the freeze dryer to see what works.
Sizes and pricing
| Format | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard resealable bag | $5.99 | Most of the range |
| Freeze dried ice cream | $8.99 | Bars and sandwich bites |
| Skiddlers Big Jar | $45.99 | 2½–3 lbs in a 10" × 4.5" × 5" reusable screw-top jar, free shipping |
Bags are single-size — there's no 1 lb / 5 lb tier here, because freeze dried candy is mostly air. A $5.99 bag of Skiddlers is about 4 oz and roughly 135 pieces, which is a lot more candy than the weight suggests.
Decoding our names
We freeze dry candy we buy at retail, so we can't sell it under the original brand names. Here's the translation:
| Our name | What it started as |
|---|---|
| Skiddlers | Skittles |
| Sour Skiddlers | Sour Skittles |
| Wild Berry Skiddlers | Wild Berry Skittles |
| Lemon Poppers | Lemonheads |
| Coco Nugget Sticks | Chick-O-Sticks |
What's in stock now
The range rotates, but these are the current regulars, all $5.99 unless noted:
- Skiddlers, Sour Skiddlers and Wild Berry Skiddlers — the best place to start
- Squishees — one of the most-visited products on our whole site
- Airhead Taffy, Taffy Chews Assorted and Taffy Chews Blue Raspberry — taffy is the most dramatic transformation of the lot
- Jolly Crunchers, Rainbow Clusters, Fruit Poppers, Lemon Poppers
- Mega Sour Booms and Cinna-Bitz — the sour and the spicy ends
- Coco Nugget Sticks
- Freeze dried ice cream at $8.99 — Choco-Chip Sandwiches, Neapolitan Sandwich Bites, Chocolate Eclair Bars and Strawberry Shortcake Eclair Bars
Because we make these in-house in small runs, the selection above is what's live today. It's worth checking back — things come and go.
Storage
The enemy of freeze dried candy is humidity. It will pull moisture back out of the air and lose its crunch, so keep the bag sealed and the jar cap tight. Store at room temperature, away from steam and direct sun. Everything ships in a resealable bag or a screw-top jar for exactly this reason.
Allergens
Allergen information varies by item and is listed in the ingredient statement on each product page. The ice cream products contain milk, and several items contain eggs, soy, wheat, peanuts or tree nuts. Because everything is made in one facility, we can't guarantee any item is free of a given allergen — read the panel on the product page before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
What does freeze dried candy taste like?
Like a more intense, crunchier version of the original. Removing the water concentrates the flavor, and the texture changes completely — chewy candy becomes brittle and crisp, and it dissolves quickly once it hits your tongue. Most people find the flavor hits harder than they expected.
Why does freeze dried candy get bigger?
As the frozen moisture vaporizes under vacuum it escapes through the candy, leaving behind a network of tiny voids. The candy puffs up and becomes porous. That porous structure is what makes it shatter rather than chew.
Do you freeze dry the candy yourselves?
Yes — every freeze dried item here is made in our own store, in small batches. That's also why the lineup changes: we're constantly testing new candies in the freeze dryer.
Is freeze dried candy healthier than regular candy?
No. Freeze drying removes water, not sugar. A bag weighs less than the candy that went into it, but the sugar content per piece is essentially unchanged. It's the same candy, drier and crunchier.
Why don't you use the original brand names?
We buy the candy, then transform it — so it's no longer the manufacturer's product and we can't sell it under their name. Hence Skiddlers rather than Skittles. The table above tells you what each one started as.
Which freeze dried candy should I try first?
Skiddlers are the most popular and the best introduction to what freeze drying actually does. If you already know you like it, the Big Jar is 2½–3 pounds with free shipping.
How long does it stay crunchy?
Indefinitely if you keep it sealed and dry — humidity is the only thing that undoes it. Once a bag has been open in a humid kitchen for a few days, the crunch starts to soften. Reseal it properly and it holds.
