Guittard Chocolate Company began waaaay back in the mid-1800s when gold rusher Etienne Guittard brought chocolate from his uncle’s factory to California, where he realized that the profit he could make off his delicious chocolate (the other miners were willing to pay a good price for it) would be worth more than gold. In 1868, Guittard opened Guittard Chocolate in San Francisco, where his son Horace took it over in the early 1900s.
