Atomic Fireballs were invented in 1954 by Nello Ferrara, the son of the founder of the Ferrara Pan Candy Company. They were named Atomic Fireballs because at the time, Americans were obsessed with idea of the atomic bomb and many were certain that warhead-borne destruction was coming our way.
Atomic fireballs are made in a process called panning, where layers of sugar and flavor are added on top of each other. There are over 100 layers in a fireball and they take two weeks to create. The reason they are so hot? They add Capsaicin ?? the stuff that make hot peppers spicy. Approximately 50 fireballs per pound.
